Father
Robert Kennedy is a Jesuit priest and Professor Emeritus of Theology at St.
Peter’s University in Jersey City. He is also a Dharma heir of Bernie Glassman
and the principal teacher at the Morning Star Zendo in New Jersey, where he is
addressed as Kennedy Roshi. He is quick to correct me when I refer to him and
his Trappist heir, Kevin Hunt, as Catholic Zen Teachers. Rather, he says, he is
a Zen Teacher who happens to be Catholic. “The phrase ‘Catholic Zen’ can imply
we are mixing Zen and Catholicism into something new. Kevin and I strive to
practice Zen as it is taught by our Zen teachers, but Catholics can pay
attention too.”
